Six of the eight Champions League matchdays have been played, and with only two games left in the qualification phase, most English clubs are in a strong position to secure a direct spot in the top eight. The seventh matchday, which kicks off tonight, could even confirm the qualification of some teams.
Liverpool Already Through
In the Premier League, the Reds lead the standings with a six-point advantage over their closest rival, and in the Champions League, Arne Slot’s side is also dominating. With six wins from six games, Liverpool have scored 13 goals while conceding just one. Their 18 points have already secured them a place in the top eight.
For the final two group-stage matches, Liverpool will first face Lille tonight—a tricky opponent that has struggled against Sporting and Sturm Graz but managed to beat both Madrid clubs. The Reds will then travel to PSV Eindhoven. Even with squad rotation, Liverpool will be favorites in both games and could finish the group stage with a perfect record of 24 points, securing the top spot.
Arsenal and Aston Villa in a Strong Position
Arsenal sit in third place with 14 points from six matches, putting them in a very favorable position for direct qualification. The Gunners will host Dinamo Zagreb before traveling to Girona. If they confirm their status as favorites in these matches, they could reach 20 points, guaranteeing a top-eight finish. However, even three or four additional points could be enough for Mikel Arteta’s team.
Aston Villa are also shining with 13 points. Their final home match against Sturm Graz appears winnable, and victory should be within reach. On matchday eight, Villa will travel to Turin to face Juventus—a tough challenge. If they manage to collect four points from their last two matches, they should secure direct qualification with a potential 20 points.
Manchester City in Danger
Manchester City, however, find themselves in a precarious position. Currently 22nd with just 8 points, they have suffered from a slump that lasted several weeks at the end of last year. Their remaining fixtures offer no respite, as they face PSG away before hosting Club Brugge in the final round.
To stay in the top 24 and keep their hopes alive for a playoff spot, City must win at least one of their remaining games. Two wins, bringing them to a possible 14 points, would give them a shot at qualification but without any guarantees.
