Matthew Bostock Claims His First World Title in the Scratch Race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships

By Arthur Le Neel October 15, 2026 3 minutes read

Matthew Bostock won the men’s scratch race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, China, securing another world title in endurance cycling for the United Kingdom. At 29, the British rider claimed the first world title of his career, finishing ahead of New Zealand’s Tom Sexton and Belgium’s Lindsay De Vylder. The victory caps a particularly successful 2026 season on the track, following several years spent competing primarily on the road.

Featured at the Olympic Games as part of the omnium rather than as a standalone event, the scratch race is an individual endurance discipline in which all riders start together, with the final standings determined by the order in which they cross the finish line. Since 2025, the men’s race has been contested over 10 kilometres. Unlike the team pursuit or the points race, there are no intermediate sprints to win: the objective is to cross the line first at the end of the distance, having managed the effort and chosen the right moment to move into position. As a result, the scratch race has more in common with a road race than many other velodrome disciplines, placing a premium on endurance, tactical awareness and finishing speed.

It was in this discipline that Matthew Bostock made the difference in Shanghai. The British rider finished ahead of New Zealand’s Tom Sexton, while Belgium’s Lindsay De Vylder completed the podium. In the scratch race, conserving enough energy to respond to accelerations in the bunch, avoiding being boxed in and finding a clear route through the field in the closing metres are often decisive. Bostock successfully combined these qualities to secure the first world title of his career.

The victory came at the end of a season that had already marked his return to prominence on the track. At the European Championships in February 2026, the British rider claimed third place in the team pursuit, adding another European medal to his record. He subsequently won the points race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, demonstrating his versatility across endurance disciplines. He also completed a double at the British National Championships, taking the titles in the points race and, notably, the scratch race.

However, Bostock’s track cycling career extends well beyond this season. The rider, now 29, had already achieved several significant results at under-23 level. In 2016, he won the team pursuit at a UCI Track Cycling World Cup round in Glasgow before claiming bronze in the discipline at both the elite European Championships and the European Under-23 Championships. He went on to win the European Under-23 team pursuit title in 2017, successfully defending his crown in 2018. These performances highlighted his potential in endurance cycling, although his appearances on the international track circuit subsequently became less frequent. Bostock went on to build a significant part of his career on the road, riding for the British amateur team Tekkerz CC.

The British rider had also competed in the first two rounds of the men’s team pursuit at the World Championships before being left out of the line-up for the bronze medal race. With the bronze medal contest taking place slightly earlier than the scratch race, he was able to focus on the individual event and seize his opportunity to claim a first world title. With the United Kingdom also securing bronze in the men’s team pursuit, Bostock’s victory further strengthens the British team’s results in the endurance events in Shanghai after the two medals in both team pursuits.

Founder and editor of Britannia Sport, I have, since 2023, chronicled the unfolding story of British sport, with a particular eye for emerging talent and the fortunes of our national teams. With a deep‑rooted passion for football, athletics, rugby and swimming, my understanding of sport has been shaped by the great international competitions, where national achievements take precedence over individual glory. A keen admirer of statistics, I take pleasure in casting light on athletes and disciplines too often overlooked, while offering a broad and exacting coverage of British sport in all its richness.
