On May 10-11 2025, Guangzhou, China, will host the world’s fastest relay teams as they battle for qualification spots at this year’s World Championships. This Tuesday, UK Athletics unveiled the list of selected athletes set to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the event.

With a new Olympic cycle underway leading towards Los Angeles 2028, the primary goal of this selection is to secure qualification for the World Championships in Tokyo later this year. This competition also presents a valuable opportunity for emerging talents to integrate with senior squads and gain crucial experience on the global stage. However, some key names will be absent, with three of the four 4x100m men’s relay medallists from Paris, Louie Hinchcliffe, Zharnel Hughes, and newly crowned European indoor 60m champion Jeremiah Azu, opting out. Similarly, Britain’s two fastest female sprinters, Daryll Neita and Dina Asher-Smith, will not feature, nor will 2024 Olympic silver medallist Matthew Hudson-Smith or Amber Anning, who was part of the 4x400m relay squad at the recent European Championships in Apeldoorn.
This will be the seventh edition of the World Athletics Relays, with teams competing across six events : the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m, as well as mixed 4x400m and, for the first time, a mixed 4x100m relay. Team GB will aim to replicate their success from the Paris Olympics, where they were the only nation to claim medals in all five relay events, a feat that former sprinter and 2004 Olympic 4x100m gold medallist Darren Campbell, now UK Athletics’ Head of Sprints, Hurdles, and Relays, hopes to match :
“Following our outstanding performances at the Paris Olympics, I’m excited to continue building on that momentum at the World Relays. This squad brings together world and Olympic medallists alongside rising stars, strengthening the depth of our relay programme. I look forward to seeing them develop their teamwork and secure qualification for the World Championships in Tokyo.”
