Yusuf Bizimana becomes the sixth-best British 800m performer in history

By Arthur Le Neel September 10, 2026 3 minutes read

It was one of the surprises of the evening in Rovereto on Tuesday, as Yusuf Bizimana won the 800m in 1:43.31, spectacularly improving his personal best for the third consecutive time since the start of the summer. This latest performance also sees him become the sixth-best British performer in history over the distance, further underlining the progress made by the British middle-distance runner in recent weeks.

A final straight that made the difference

Yusuf Bizimana produced an excellent finish to his 800m in Rovereto. Competing in a particularly strong race, the British runner remained in contention for the leading places before making his move in the closing stages. It was in the final straight that he truly pulled clear of his rivals, making the decisive difference over the final metres to win in 1:43.31, ahead of Frenchman Louey Ouerrat, who finished second in 1:43.73.

The victory comes as part of an particularly impressive second half of the season. On 11 July, Bizimana had already lowered his personal best by running 1:44.08 in Los Angeles. He improved it again on 30 August in Brescia, this time clocking 1:44.02, before breaking the 1:44 barrier for the first time on Tuesday evening in Italy, and by a considerable margin. In less than two months, his best time has therefore improved significantly. Before this run of performances, his personal best stood at 1:44.80, set in 2024. The British runner has now taken almost a second and a half off his previous best in the space of just three races, producing three consecutive personal bests in the process.

In the history of British 800m running, Bizimana’s 1:43.31 makes him the sixth-best British performer ever over the distance. He now joins an especially distinguished group in an event where the United Kingdom has had a number of outstanding performers over the years. Ahead of him are Sebastian Coe, Ben Pattison, Max Burgin, Steve Cram and Peter Elliott.

Despite being a major middle-distance talent, his name is still not particularly well known in the United Kingdom. He had, however, already produced a notable performance in 2024 over 1000m indoors, running 2:18.10, a time which placed him fourth on the British all-time list for the distance. Inspired by Josh Kerr, he moved to the United States at an early stage to continue his studies and collegiate career in Texas, where he notably won the NCAA indoor 800m title in 2023.

With his 1:43.31, which places him tenth on the list of the fastest 800m times recorded in the world this season, the now 26-year-old British runner could perhaps establish himself as the third British man to watch over 800m at present, alongside Max Burgin and Ben Pattison, who will compete this weekend at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest.

With a deep‑rooted passion for football, athletics, rugby and swimming, my understanding of sport has been shaped by the great international competitions, where national achievements take precedence over individual glory. A keen admirer of statistics, I take pleasure in casting light on athletes and disciplines too often overlooked, while offering a broad and exacting coverage of British sport in all its richness.
