Matthew Brennan victorious again on Stage 5 of the Vuelta

By Arthur Le Neel August 26, 2026 4 minutes read

Matthew Brennan has continued his outstanding start to the Vuelta with another stage victory. The 21-year-old British rider claimed Stage 5 on Wednesday, securing his second win of his maiden Grand Tour. Perfectly supported by Visma-Lease a Bike in the closing kilometres, Matthew Brennan once again underlined why he is regarded as one of the leading prospects in British cycling, becoming the second-youngest rider in history to record at least two stage wins at the Vuelta.

A second victory for Matthew Brennan

Matthew Brennan’s first victory at this year’s Vuelta had already represented a significant breakthrough. On Stage 2, between Monaco and Manosque, the British rider claimed his first Grand Tour success after a demanding sprint following more than 200 kilometres of racing and a rising finish. At just 21, Brennan beat Pau Miquel and Tadej Pogacar, immediately showing that he had not arrived at his first three-week race merely to learn about the demands of Grand Tour racing. That first victory also highlighted the tactical maturity of Visma-Lease a Bike. The team had several cards to play in the closing stages, with Wout van Aert launching an attack two kilometres from the line before Brennan took advantage of his team-mates’ work to finish the job once the race came back together. Christophe Laporte, in particular, guided the young British rider through a nervous finale, helping him secure the ideal position before opening up his sprint. On his Grand Tour debut, Brennan had therefore turned his first genuine opportunity into a victory.

Three days later, Stage 5 confirmed that his first success had been far more than a one-off. Once again, the same three men played key roles in delivering the same outcome. On the road to Roquetes, the profile of the stage had taken several more traditional sprinters out of contention, particularly after the Puerto de Paüls, around 25 kilometres from the finish. Brennan, however, remained in the right group, once again demonstrating his ability to get over the climbs before retaining enough freshness to contest the sprint.

The closing kilometres then provided another demonstration of Visma-Lease a Bike’s collective strength. Wout van Aert and then Christophe Laporte once again delivered their young team-mate perfectly into position. Brennan was able to bide his time before coming off Laporte’s wheel at around 150 metres to go, powering to victory ahead of Jordi Meeus and Vincenzo Albanese. It was a clear and convincing win from a reduced bunch, with his team having created the ideal conditions for him to make the most of his finishing speed.

The double now places Brennan in a particularly distinguished category. Matthew Brennan has become the second-youngest rider in history to reach at least two stage victories at the Vuelta, after Tadej Pogacar in 2019. His first win on Stage 2 had already made him the fifth-youngest stage winner in the history of the race, making this latest achievement another significant marker in the early stages of his career.

His background goes some way towards explaining that effectiveness. Before making his mark on the road, Brennan had already built an impressive pedigree on the track. In 2023, he became junior world champion in the individual pursuit, setting a junior world record in the process, while he also won the Madison world title. That track background has clearly helped develop the power and acceleration now visible in his sprints. Yet his performances on the road have also revealed a more complete rider, capable of getting over difficult terrain and remaining competitive on more selective parcours rather than relying solely on flat, conventional bunch finishes.

At just 21, Matthew Brennan therefore appears to offer British cycling a genuine rider capable of challenging for stage victories on a regular basis. His progress since turning professional has been remarkably rapid, and his two victories at the Vuelta appear to vindicate Visma-Lease a Bike’s decision to extend his contract last winter, keeping the British talent with the team until 2029.
