The future of British track cycling will take centre stage from 15 to 20 July in Anadia, Portugal, as 33 promising young athletes gear up to represent the United Kingdom at the 2025 UEC Junior and U23 European Track Championships. This competition has become a key stepping stone on the path to Olympic success. For some riders, it will mark their first experience on the international stage; for others, already world or European medallists, it is a chance to cement their status as rising stars.
A New Generation Chasing British Cycling Excellence
Over the years, the United Kingdom has established itself as a powerhouse in world track cycling, thanks to a highly structured and successful development system. Icons such as Sir Jason Kenny, Dame Laura Kenny and Sir Chris Hoy — who together boast 22 Olympic medals — have led the way. Today, a new wave of talent is looking to follow in their footsteps.
Among the standout names in this year’s squad is Josh Charlton, already a medallist at senior World and European Championships, who will lead the U23 men’s endurance squad alongside Noah Hobbs, Elliot Rowe, Will Salter — the 2023 European junior omnium champion — and Ben Wiggins, the latest in a storied British cycling family.
In the U23 women’s endurance squad, Maddie Leech returns fresh from winning omnium silver at the elite European Championships earlier this season. She’ll be joined by Grace Lister, Izzy Sharp, Lucy Glover and 18-year-old Carys Lloyd, a former junior world and European champion.
The junior men’s endurance lineup will be spearheaded by individual pursuit world champion Henry Hobbs, alongside Rory Gravelle, Max Hinds, Albie Jones and Daniel Thompson. On the women’s side, Erin Boothman, who dominated the Apeldoorn Junior International earlier this year, leads a dynamic squad also featuring Abigail Miller, Phoebe Taylor, Evie Smith and Arabella Blackburn.
In the sprint events, Rhian Edmunds will headline the U23 women’s team after securing three silver medals in her elite debut. She will team up with Iona Moir and Georgette Rand, who swept the board in junior European competition last season. On the men’s side, 20-year-old Olympic team sprint silver medallist Ed Lowe will join forces with Marcus Hiley and Oliver Pettifer.
Among the junior sprinters, experienced campaigner Archie Gill will guide debutants Ioan Hepburn, Kristian Larigo and Charlie Holt. Bronwen Howard-Rees and Eve James will carry British hopes in the junior women’s sprint events.
More than just a championship, Anadia 2025 is a pivotal milestone for these young athletes — one that could shape their journey to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and beyond.
