Millie Couzens, Erin Boothman and Henry Hobbs: The Young British Riders Who excelled at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai

By Arthur Le Neel October 19, 2026 5 minutes read

Among the many riders who made their mark, Millie Couzens, Erin Boothman and Henry Hobbs stood out at the 2026 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, China, as they made their senior World Championships debuts. Couzens and Boothman helped secure world titles in the women’s team pursuit and Madison, while Hobbs contributed to the British bronze medal in the men’s team pursuit and impressed in the omnium. Their performances formed part of an outstanding overall campaign for the United Kingdom, which finished top of the medal table with six world titles and 12 medals.

A Promising New Generation and an Outstanding Overall Performance

For Millie Couzens and Erin Boothman, these World Championships quickly proved to be a success. Both were competing at the senior World Championships for the first time and helped secure the women’s team pursuit title, alongside Anna Morris and Josie Knight, on the second day of competition. The British quartet dominated Italy in the final, clocking 4:04.610 and finishing more than five seconds clear. That margin underlined the British team’s control of the event. Having already set the fastest time in qualifying, they also demonstrated their ability to handle the pressure of a world final. For 19-year-old Boothman, the victory added to an already impressive junior record, which includes four world titles in that category, one of them accompanied by a junior world record in the team pursuit. For 22-year-old Couzens, it represented her first senior world title, following her two medals at the European Championships earlier in the year.

Couzens nevertheless demonstrated that her potential extended well beyond team events. She also won the women’s individual pursuit, following an all-British final against Josie Knight. Knight had set a world record at the European Championships in Konya in February, where Couzens had to settle for bronze, and remains the current world-record holder. Couzens beat her by 0.497 seconds after setting the fastest qualifying time of 4:21.161. Boothman, meanwhile, also confirmed that she is already capable of competing at the highest level across several events. Partnering Anna Morris, one of the leading figures in British endurance cycling, she won the women’s Madison, adding a second world title to her team pursuit triumph. The pair scored points in six of the 12 intermediate sprints, winning two of them, while also gaining a lap on the field to secure an additional 20 points. They finished on 40 points, ahead of France on 33.

In the men’s events, Henry Hobbs contributed to the United Kingdom’s bronze medal in the team pursuit. Riding alongside his brother Noah Hobbs, Ethan Vernon and Oliver Wood in the bronze-medal ride-off against France, he helped the quartet produce a comeback that culminated in a 3:47.245 victory. Denmark nevertheless remains the benchmark in the discipline, having claimed its fourth consecutive world title with a commanding margin in the final. Hobbs also competed in the men’s omnium, where his results demonstrated considerable ability. He finished eighth in the scratch race and fourth in the tempo race before winning the elimination race. That victory brought him back into contention for a podium place ahead of the final points race, which he began in third position overall. However, he was unable to hold on to his place and scored only two points in the event. Lap gains by several rivals reshaped the standings and pushed him down to sixth overall. As at the European Championships earlier in the year, the final event proved more challenging for him.

Beyond these three young riders, the United Kingdom finished the World Championships at the top of the medal table, with six gold medals, three silvers and three bronzes. Victories for Matthew Bostock in the men’s scratch race, Mark Stewart in the points race and Anna Morris in the omnium complemented the titles in the women’s team pursuit, individual pursuit and Madison. The women’s performances were particularly impressive across the six Olympic track cycling disciplines: team pursuit, team sprint, individual sprint, keirin, Madison and omnium. The United Kingdom secured three gold medals, two silvers and one bronze across these events, reaching the podium in every discipline. The silver medal in the team sprint, won by Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell and Rhianna Parris-Smith, along with Finucane’s silver in the individual sprint and bronze in the keirin, helped complete this comprehensive medal haul.

Matthew Richardson’s absence remains an important factor when assessing the British results. The sprint specialist, who is capable of challenging for victory in the individual sprint, team sprint and keirin, was not present in Shanghai. His return for future major championships could give the United Kingdom further medal opportunities, although the competition remains particularly fierce. The Dutch are a leading force in the team sprint, while Harrie Lavreysen remains the man to beat in the individual sprint events.
