Angharad Evans claimed the European title in the women’s 100m breaststroke in Paris, producing another outstanding performance as the British swimmer once again lowered her own national record. After impressing in the heats and then taking another step forward in the semi-finals, Evans confirmed her status as the clear favourite and secured a fourth gold medal for the United Kingdom at these European Championships. Katie Shanahan has been crowned European champion in the 200m backstroke at the Paris European Championships , confirming her status as the swimmer to beat after topping both the heats and semi-finals. The British swimmer, the only competitor to dip below 2:10 and then 2:08 since the start of the competition, took another significant step forward in the final. Her winning time of 2:06.13 saw her pull clear of the field and improve her personal best by more than a second, and the national record by 0.53s. Following the two British titles won in the 4x200m freestyle relays the previous evening, Shanahan has now added another gold medal to the United Kingdom’s medal tally in the Paris swimming pool. Freya Colbert, Abbie Wood, Leah Schlosshan and Freya Anderson secured the United Kingdom’s first European title in Paris by winning the women’s 4*200m freestyle relay. Just minutes later, Matt Richards, Jack McMillan, James Guy and Duncan Scott followed suit by taking gold in the men’s event. Shaikira King and Otis Poole won two bronze medals for the United Kingdom during the fourth evening of the World U20 Championships in Eugene, while the mixed 4x100m relay claimed silver after lowering its national record once again in the final. Divine Iheme, Savannah Morgan-McKenzie, Mathew Ajayi and Sophie Thomas stole the headlines by setting a new World U20 record in the mixed 4x100m relay on the second day of the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene. It proved to be another productive day for the British team, with several athletes progressing through the rounds, Thea Brown narrowly missing out on a heptathlon medal, and Jake Odey-Jordan finishing fifth in the men’s 100m final.
