Joe Fraser, Uzair Chowdhury and the entire British delegation made their mark at the Men’s European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb. With four gold medals, one silver and four bronze, the United Kingdom finished top of the medal table with nine podium finishes in total. Only the Russians collected more medals overall, although they won just two titles. After a more frustrating week for the women’s team, despite Eli Cardelli’s junior beam bronze and several fourth-place finishes, the response from the British gymnasts was emphatic. This summer, Lucy Bull and Edward Scott delivered two rare British results in the javelin at the European U18 Championships in Rieti. Bull won the women’s title with 56.60m, while Scott claimed silver in the men’s competition with 70.02m. Two medals which, on their own, are obviously not enough to herald a revival of British javelin. Yet they raise a broader question in an event where many of the leading throwers of recent years have come from countries in which cricket plays a major role : does the United Kingdom finally have a generation capable of beginning to close the gap ? The British 4x100m relays completed a clean sweep in Birmingham by winning both European titles. Following the individual successes of Amy Hunt and Romell Glave over 100m, as well as silver medals for Azu over 100m and Zharnel Hughes over 200m, the United Kingdom continued its strong showing in the sprint events. The women retained their continental title, while the men reclaimed a crown they had last won in 2022. Amy Hunt claimed a second European title in Birmingham by winning the 200 metres, just days after securing gold in the 100m. The British sprinter, already impressive in the semi-finals, confirmed her status as favourite by winning in 22.19, the fastest European performance of the year. She finished ahead of Rhasidat Adeleke, who set a new national record of 22.28, while fellow British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith took bronze in 22.29. With two individual titles to her name, Hunt has therefore completed the sprint double over 100m and 200m, with the women’s 4x100m and mixed 4x100m relays still to come and potentially offering further opportunities for medals in Birmingham.
