After returning to Aston Villa this summer following the Midlands club’s purchase of the player sold a year earlier, Jaden Philogene, who has struggled for game time this season, is set to leave the Villans, with a move to Suffolk looking imminent.

An Exciting 2023-2024 Season for the Tigers
Transferred to Hull City for the 2023-2024 season from Aston Villa, young Jaden Philogene had impressed, despite an injury that sidelined him for about ten matches across all competitions. The England U21 international recorded 12 goals and 6 assists in 32 Championship matches. A standout moment of the season was his equalizing goal on February 13, 2024, against Rotherham. Philogene skillfully dribbled past two defenders and scored with a stunning Rabona shot, even though the angle was tight. With this goal, he became the first player in the English second division to be nominated for the Puskás Award, which honors the best goal of the season. His name began to circulate through the ranks of English football and was catching the attention of top European clubs. His performances also earned him a return to England’s youth teams, from which he hadn’t been called up since 2021, and drew the interest of his former club.
A Mixed Return to Aston Villa
After catching the eye of Aston Villa, who felt they had let go of one of their gems, Philogene returned to his boyhood club on July 19, 2024. Initially relegated to a substitute role, Unai Emery gave him his first start in the Champions League against Bayern Munich. Although he played well and even believed he had provided an assist, only to see the goal ruled out for offside in the build-up, Philogene gained more playing time, though his performances didn’t follow suit — with no contributions since the start of the season.
Since the beginning of the winter transfer window, several clubs, particularly in the Premier League, had shown interest in his services, and while he was linked with a move to Everton, it’s another club in blue, fighting for survival, that will secure his signature — Ipswich Town — for a fee of around £20 million.
Joining Other Young English Talents
Currently 18th in the Premier League, Ipswich Town will have to fight until the final games of the season if they are to stay up. While the club is solid defensively, they’ve struggled to score, though things have improved recently. However, with Omari Hutchinson (attacking midfielder) and Liam Delap (striker, who is the most prolific U21 player, ahead of Jhon Durán), both England U21 internationals, alongside the arrival of Philogene, who primarily operates on the left wing, the young attack at Ipswich will be an exciting prospect in the second half of the season. Under the guidance of Kieran McKenna, who, according to Fabrizio Romano, played a key role in persuading Philogene to choose Ipswich over Everton, the young winger will have the chance to shine again in England’s top flight and prove his worth on the biggest stage.
