British hopes were high going into the opening round of the Junior Wimbledon Championships, with a strong home presence across the draws. But for many, especially those making their Grand Slam debuts, the challenge proved a step too far against more seasoned opponents. With the boys’ singles now devoid of any British representation, all eyes turn to three promising young women : Hannah Klugman, Mingge Xu, and Ruby Cooling, who remain in contention and will feature in today’s round of 16.

Three British Girls Flying the Flag on Wednesday.
Today sees three British girls take to the courts. None are scheduled in the opening wave of matches at 11:00 BST, but two will be in action shortly after, from 12:10 BST : Hannah Klugman and Mingge Xu.
Klugman, the tournament’s No.2 seed, will be especially eager to go all the way on home turf, just weeks after her loss in the Roland-Garros final. She faces another seeded player in the last 16, Spain’s Charo Esquiva Bañuls, the No.13 seed in what promises to be one of the day’s marquee junior matchups.
Over on Court 18 at the same time, Mingge Xu will be hoping to maintain the form that saw her brush aside Czech No.12 seed Alena Kovačková with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win. The Brit faces Australia’s Tahlia Kokkinis and will be looking to replicate that high level this afternoon.
Both Klugman and Xu come into the junior tournament with valuable Grand Slam experience under their belts. Each received a wildcard into the women’s main draw, where they showed promising glimpses despite falling in tough first-round draws. Klugman to No.29 seed Leylah Fernandez, and Xu to former Grand Slam champion Emma Raducanu.
Perhaps the most unexpected run has come from Ruby Cooling, who was handed a wildcard into the tournament. Hailing from Lincoln, Cooling has made the most of her opportunity, knocking out Leena Friedman in round one before stunning No.16 seed Rositsa Dencheva in the second round.
Her reward is a massive test: a last-16 tie against Roland-Garros junior champion Lilli Tagger. The Austrian is in strong form but had to battle hard to overcome Lea Nillson in a gruelling second-round contest (7-6, 7-6). Cooling will need to be at her absolute best if she’s to keep her dream run alive.
