With just over two-thirds of the Premier League season completed, the race for the title and European places remains as fierce as ever, while three teams appear to be falling behind in the battle for survival. This week’s key moments included defeats for Arsenal and Manchester City, while Liverpool extended their lead at the top.

Arsenal suffer costly home defeat to West Ham
Arsenal’s hopes of closing the gap on Liverpool were dealt a severe blow as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to West Ham. This loss ended an impressive 15-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and added further pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side. Earlier in the week, Liverpool had dropped points with a draw against Aston Villa, offering Arsenal a golden opportunity to cut the deficit to five points. However, the Gunners struggled to impose their game against a well-drilled and resilient West Ham side.
The breakthrough came just before half-time in the 45th minute when Jarrod Bowen latched onto a superb cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and slotted the ball past a helpless David Raya. Arsenal pushed for an equaliser in the second half but lacked cutting edge in front of goal. Much of their frustration stemmed from West Ham’s disciplined defensive display, which effectively neutralised key playmakers such as Martin Ødegaard. Arsenal’s task became even more difficult in the 83rd minute when substitute Myles Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul on Mohammed Kudus, correctly deemed to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. Down to ten men, Arsenal continued to press but were unable to find a breakthrough, leaving them with a frustrating and damaging defeat.
Marco Asensio shines as Aston Villa edge past Chelsea
Aston Villa secured an important and dramatic 2-1 victory over Chelsea, with Marco Asensio delivering a match-winning brace. In a highly competitive encounter, Villa came from behind after Chelsea had taken an early lead.
The Blues struck first in the ninth minute when Enzo Fernández finished off a well-placed through ball, putting Chelsea in control during the first half. However, Aston Villa showed resilience and improved significantly after the break. The equaliser arrived in the 57th minute, with Marcus Rashford, introduced at half-time, delivering a pinpoint cross that Asensio converted expertly.
As the game entered the dying moments, Asensio once again proved decisive. In the 89th minute, he capitalised on another Rashford delivery, finishing past Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who was at fault for the goal following a misjudged rush off his line.
Despite Chelsea’s late attempts to respond, Villa held firm to secure a vital win. The result keeps Unai Emery’s side in the hunt for European qualification following an inconsistent start to the season. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s struggles with consistency continued, and this latest defeat leaves them seventh in the table, further denting their hopes of securing European football next season.
Newcastle edge Nottingham Forest in seven-goal thriller
At St James’ Park, Newcastle emerged victorious in a thrilling 4-3 encounter against Nottingham Forest, wrapping up the win with an explosive 20-minute spell.
The match began on a tough note for the Magpies as Callum Hudson-Odoi fired Forest ahead with a stunning strike in just the fourth minute. However, Newcastle responded in emphatic fashion, netting four goals in the space of 11 minutes.
Youngster Lewis Miley equalised in the 23rd minute, converting a fine cross from Lewis Hall – who continued his excellent form. Just two minutes later, Jacob Murphy put Newcastle in front, before Hall won a penalty on the half-hour mark, confidently dispatched by Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward then added a fourth goal shortly after his spot-kick, seemingly putting Newcastle in total control.
Yet, Forest refused to go down without a fight. Goals from Nikola Milenkovic and Ryan Yates reduced the deficit to 4-3, setting up a tense finale. Despite the late pressure, Newcastle held on to claim all three points. This crucial win keeps them firmly in contention for European qualification, currently level on points with Manchester City in fifth place. Given the performances of English clubs in Europe this season, that position looks increasingly likely to guarantee Champions League football next season.
Liverpool stun Manchester City with Salah-inspired win
Liverpool produced a statement 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad, ending a long winless run at City’s ground dating back to 2015. The result solidifies their position at the top of the Premier League, extending their lead over Arsenal to 11 points.
City were without Erling Haaland, a major absence that significantly impacted their attacking threat. Liverpool took full advantage, with the opening goal arriving in the 26th minute. Mohamed Salah, positioned just outside the box, unleashed a shot that took a slight deflection off Nathan Aké, wrongfooting Ederson and finding the back of the net.
In the 67th minute, Salah was involved again, this time turning provider for Dominik Szoboszlai, who clinically slotted home Liverpool’s second goal, sealing the victory.
Despite a few half-chances for City to get back into the game, Liverpool’s defensive organisation and game management proved too strong for Pep Guardiola’s side. Jürgen Klopp’s men showcased both resilience and attacking efficiency, sending a strong message to their title rivals. With Arsenal now trailing by 11 points, albeit with a game in hand, Liverpool have taken a commanding position in the title race.
